"Interesting Quotes"

We should go out and invite feedback from organizations rather than pushing this bill through to a conclusion in a rushed manner. "(Hon. C. Hansen in Hansard, March 31, 2009)

Steve Weatherbe's story in the VI Business Examiner last fall (October 6, 2008):

Finance Minister Hansen Colin Hansen said the review promised by predecessor Collins had happened. In fact, he said, there was an ongoing review of legislation and regulation regarding condominiums and VISOA’s input “was always welcome.” However, he could not specify a time frame for the conclusion of the reviewing process, nor could he offer his own or his department’s evaluation of the concerns of condo owners.

There is major dissent with VISOA’s report. The Lower Mainland-based Condo Home Owners Association has done its own survey and believes that the situation is far less serious. “I totally disagree with it,” says Tony Gioventu, CHOA’s executive director. He rates British Columbia’s laws protecting new home owners “some of the best in the world.”

But David Kristmanson of the Pacific Condominium Owners Association, a small group of 4,000 strata owners based in Surrey and White Rock, applauds VISOA’s study. “We really don’t have the manpower to lobby politicians so we are grateful for VISOA for bringing these issues up.”       On the other hand CHOA, he said, hadn't shown much leadership.

Don Cayo of the Vancouver Sun (October 31, 2008):

"I don't know why this issue fell off the provincial government's agenda - possibly because it was Collins's project and he resigned from government before it made it to the top of his priority pile. But, whatever the reason, it's time for a new champion to take it up again."

"Government estimates of revenue from the PPT for fiscal 2008-09 run as high as $1 billion, a substantail chunk of that money will come from sales of new and previously owned strata condos.

"Their owners deserve better."
